Residents "Stuff the Bus" with learning tools

Residents from throughout the area continued to show their support to the local schools Thursday by donating school supplies at the "Stuff the Bus" school supply drive on Thursday at the Windmill Grill.

The event is co-sponsored by the Windmill Grill and the Howard County Commissioners.

Each day this week a different Howard County school participates in the campaign. Everyone who donated a school supply received a card from the Windmill Grill for either free biscuits and gravy or a double-scoop sundae.

Thursday was Kokomo-Center Township Consolidated Schools' day.

"It started a little slow today and then it picked up," said Darrell York with Kokomo-Center Schools transportation services. "We're going to help a lot of kids. The good thing is they included all the schools. They all will benefit from this."

During the two hours from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., people continued to show the support they had shown all week.

"I think it's very needed," Sharon Dempsey said. "As a former teacher, I know children can't do the best work if there are no supplies to do it. Just a package of pencils can help."

Another family took advantage of deals when shopping for supplies.

"Oh it's wonderful, we were able to take advantage of various specials at stores," Margraret Shotwell said. "We just bought a little extra."

A Kokomo High School English teacher who helped by donating some supplies summed up the cause.

"Good tools make good students," Lynne Bolinger said.

Friday will be the final day of the school supply drive with a bus from Eastern Howard School Corp. parked at the Windmill Grill from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
