More than a hundred runners and walkers participated in the 4th annual Run for Shelter 5K benefiting CAM at Oakbrook Valley and Koh-Koh-Mah Historical site on Saturday.

Coordinated Assistance Ministries, Inc, or CAM, is the only homeless day shelter serving the six-county area. CAM received $4,495 from this year's event, said Rev. Ruth Lawson, executive director of CAM. Oakbrook Community Church raised the money in pledges and donations for the event, she said. In the four years this event has occurred, CAM has received $19,839, she said. Including the WIOU-CAM Golf Outing, CAM has been given about $8,000 at the last two fundraisers, she said.

"It was great," she said. "The rain held off and it was delightfully cool. It was a wonderful event."

Dana Neer won this year's men's race with a time of 19:26 and Annie Horine won the women's title with a time of 24:56. Rick Spencer won the men's title for walkers with a time of 33:18 and Kim Brewster won the women's walking title with a time of 34:27.

Lawson said she is thankful for the effort of Pastor Mark Malin of Oakbrook Community Church, Doug Mygrant, Karl Stoneking, Dana Neer, Larry Embling and Club Kokomo Roadrunners in putting on this year's event. She said she is also thankful to the 118 runners and walkers who registered.

The lead sponsor for this year's event was Howard Regional Health Systems Imaging Center of North Central Indiana. Additional sponsors were Ameriprise Financial - Gene Kostrewa, CFP, Crume-Ellis Auctioneer/Appraisal Realtor Group, P.J. Noel Asphalt Services, Rayl Realty Inc., The Hardie Group, The Wyman Group, American Tool and Party Rental, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Kokomo, Kroger - Northwest Plaza, McDonald's Restaurants, Mid-Central Trophy, Nature's Best, Non-Stop Advertising, Raab/Kinetico Water Systems, St. Patrick's Women homemade cookies and Top Banana Farm Market.
