Dozens participated in giving to the 12th annual WIOU-CAM Golf Outing on Saturday at Rice's Golf Center.
The golf outing was a fundraiser for Coordinated Assistance Ministries, Inc., or CAM. CAM is the only homeless day shelter in the six-county area.
This year's tournament earned $7,468 to CAM. In all, 48 players participated on the course, along with 44 sponsors, who helped out in the fundraiser. The sponsors included 12 churches, one in memory of Rick Carson and 31 businesses. The top sponsoring church was St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. It gave $1,916 to CAM. Second place was Main Street United Methodist Church with $1,580. Since the golf outing first began in 1998, CAM has been given $91,683.98.
"The Lord blessed the gathering and the money raised will help keep the van and the roof over the men's heads and the day shelter open," Executive Director Rev. Ruth Lawson said.
In terms of scoring, there was a tie at this year's event. The championship team was from Liberty Baptist Church and Family Psychiatric Center, which included Brad Frawley, Greg Goldstein, Bob Lawson and Jayne Ribble. Coming in second place in a tie was the team from Fairfield Christian Church, which included Jim Reed, Bill Lucas, Don Lindberg and Terry Wright.
The golfers who participated in the event represented Central Bank, Judson Road Christian Church, Liberty Baptist Church, Family Psychiatric Center, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Main Street United Methodist Church, Parr United Methodist Church, Fairfield Christian Church, CAM, Calvary Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Morning Star Church and Faith Presbyterian Church.
The forecasted weather for the day of the golf outing was to be a high of 91.
"We finished the tournament before the heat came and some of us out there were even wearing sweat shirts," Lawson said. "We are so blessed that we have never had any rain at any of the tournaments."
The next fundraiser to benefit CAM is the "Run for Shelter" 5K run and walk to be held at Oakbrook Valley at 8 a.m. on Aug. 22. Forms are available at Oakbrook Community Church and at CAM. Pre-registered participants will receive a t-shirt and the cost is $15 for individuals and $40 for families of three or more. The pre-registration deadline is Aug. 14. After the deadline, the cost is $20 for individuals.
