GREENTOWN- Kokomo is not the only place to get fresh fruits and vegetables at a farmers' market. In now its fourth year, the Greentown Farmers' Market has become a community staple in eastern Howard County.

The farmers' market runs every other Saturday until Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon at the corner of west Main and south Green streets, near Key Bank. The remaining days are this Saturday (Aug. 22), Sept. 5 and Sept. 19.

Dave Turner, chairperson of the Greentown Farmers' Market, has been involved with the market since its beginning. The idea was brought up at a Greentown Main Street Association meeting and it was later agreed upon, he said.

The produce is grown locally and it includes corn, melons, apples and fruits that are in season, he said.

"We have good community support and hopefully people can take advantage of it at a reasonable price," Turner said.

At some of the markets, people can also purchase toy tractors, craft-made jewelry and Greentown glass, he said.

"We are low key," he said. "It's just a nice community event and it's something that we provide for the community through the Greentown Main Street Association."

Both the Greentown and Kokomo farmers' markets run on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The Kokomo Farmers' Market is located at city parking lot west of Union Street and between Sycamore and Walnut streets. Kokomo's runs every Saturday until Oct. 10 and Greentown's is every other Saturday until Sept. 19.
